In addition to the instruction in your intake form, the below is important preparation to ensure you get the most possible benefit from your Reiki session. While not always necessary, recipients may choose to relax, meditate, or simply be open to receiving the energy during a session. It’s always better to take a time out from the world to sit in silence and acknowledge receiving the universal life force energy.

Prepare the body: Drink plenty of water (not flavored or sparkling) before and after your session to help your body manage energy shifts. Choose soft, loose, comfortable and breathable clothing to avoid distractions while lying down. You should remove glasses and jewelry before the session. Eat lightly, client should avoid heavy meals and processed foods for 1–2 hours before, as the body shouldn't be focused on digestion during the session. Ground beforehand by walking in nature, sitting with bare feet on the ground, sitting at the base of a tree or doing light stretching. You should not drink alcohol/caffeine, smoke tobacco or vape of any kind for at minimum 1 hour (ideally 24 hours) before and after the session. You should not use technology of any kind for at least 20 minutes before and after the session.

Create a Peaceful Environment: The physical environment plays a important role. Make sure the room
is quiet, the temperature is comfortable, and the table or chair is supportive. Remove distractions from the space. In-person: Choose the space, the practitioner will bring everything that is needed and will set up the space upon arrival. Virtual/Remote: Client should find a quiet room or area to relax quietly in nature. Calming tools can be used to enhance the environment —  play soft music, light a candle, burn sage/incense or use essential oils to create a sacred space. Be sure to keep phones/computers/tablets in a separate room and silenced. If you are doing a virtual session you should keep your phone/computer at least 2 feet away from your body to avoid electromagnetic field interference.

Pre-Session Mental Preparation: Before the session, define your intention/goal, such as "I am open to receiving Reiki for my highest good" or "I allow my body to heal”. Let go of expectations and approach the session with an open mind, free from judgment or the need to feel specific sensations. Reiki works regardless of whether you feel tingling, warmth, or nothing at all. Express gratitude in advance for the healing energy. Do not "try" too hard to relax, as this can create tension. Simply allow the Reiki energy
to relax you.

During the session: Perform deep, calming breaths at the start of the session to relax your nervous system.
If you feel fidgety or uncomfortable, adjust your position. You can sit up or ask for blankets/pillows.
If your mind is racing, repeat a mantra like "I am safe," "I am peaceful," or "I am enough”. During the session, notice your thoughts, feelings, and sensations as they will give you further insight into awareness and growth.
